Archive of Marcia's Musings July 19-25, 2004Good, Thanks!
Dani and I have had a fun couple of days. On Friday, we went to the Amish Market-- she'd never been to one or seen any Amish or Menonite so it was kind of a shocking experience for her. It was the only time since she's been here that she was almost completely speechless. If you've never seen anyone who lives so simply, it can be a very humbling experience-- I remember it was for me the first time I'd seen someone "like that". Her reaction was appropriate-- which I think surprised her.
Then we went on down to "downtown" Annapolis and took a cruise on the Harbor Queen. A nice little 40-minute tour around the harbor of Annapolis. We followed that with a nice lunch at Philips-- good food and she learned how to eat crab. She ordered "steamed crab" and was expecting Alaskan crab legs-- nope, she got the whole banana or at least the WHOLE blue crab. The waitress helped her figure out how to "peel" and crack their shells and she was thrilled at that.
Today we went to see "A Cinderella Story" which was nothing exceptional but cute and well done for today's teenager-- she had asked to go to it which kinda surprised me.
Today is also her last full day in our home-- I'll miss her. She and I have gotten to be pretty good friends, I think. Dani's really a sweet kid and it has been fun and relaxing spending this time with her. I can't wait for her next visit and for my other niece and nephew to be old enough to come for a visit on their own, too!! It should be fun to watch them come and share the experience with them, too.
I guess that's it for now-- have a great evening!
Thursday, July 22, 2004Extremely Laid Back
My niece and I are really taking the week slow-- yesterday, in fact, the two of us did nothing! I sewed up a storm but she slept up a storm, again. Well, she's going through a growth spurt, right?
Today, we went to see "The Notebook"-- good movie! James Garner and Gena Rowlands are wonderful, as usual. And, Dani has just come back from a nap which, when you think about the thunderstorm we're going through right now, is a good thing.
Tomorrow, we're off to Annapolis-- partly because I have a doctor appointment later in the day but also because she needs to see something besides the inside of her eyelids while she's here!
Hopefully, there'll be something picture-worthy and I'll put some of those up here tomorrow.
Until then . . . have a good evening!
Tuesday, July 20, 2004Amazing!!!
You forget when you're not a teenager anymore: you can sleep for 15 hours straight!!! Last night, Dani (our niece) went to sleep around 11, she said. Granted she got/made a couple of calls to the left coast but, she didn't wake up until nearly 2pm this afternoon!!! Wow!! I would've been more worried about her except that she and I did talk about 10am when I informed her that I was going to start the laundry. No problemo-- like she had a chance of hearing me.
Finally, Lucy was the catalyst for waking her up. The garbage men came to steal our trash and Lucy had to let us know. Since Lucy has been known to wake the dead, in addition to teenaged girls, Dani was awake from that point onward.
Around 3, she suggested that we head to the mall to look for some CDs that she wanted. So, we headed out to do our shopping thang and we were successful in finding some of the stuff that she wanted. We came home and called Brian to pick up Chinese food for dinner-- tons-o-fun was had by all.
She's really a cool kid-- lots of fun to talk to and has some interesting things to say. We agreed that she should see Annapolis while we're here and we should go to "The Notebook"-- amazing that we agreed on a movie to see (her tastes tend to run toward "Anchorman" and "Dodge Ball"!!)
Anyway, while she slept this morning and this afternoon, I worked on the laundry and did some sewing. Its been over a week since I sewed so I was glad to get some time to do it.
That's about all of the news from here-- thanks for stopping by and have a good night!
Monday, July 19, 2004I am Back!
I know it may not have seemed like it but, I have been back for a few days now. Trying to catch up on my sleep from "time travel" and getting finished with things so I could go on "vacation" this week.
The good news: I did NOT get sick when I was in California!! I couldn't believe it! From the moment that I hit the airport, however, I started taking my extra vitamins and minerals to prevent a cold. I did have "travel tummy" but, then I was consuming a lot of food that I don't normally consume.
Saturday, Lucy and I had two naps-- one after I got home from getting my hair done and one around 4 in the afternoon. Sunday we went to the errand-running per usual and then picked up our niece at the airport.
Today, we went to the Washington Monument with her along with the World War II Memorial. Of course, she is a teenager (14) with a cell phone soooo, a lot of her time is spent either talking on the phone or text-messaging with someone. Tomorrow, we're going to take it easy on the touristy stuff and just hang out at the house. I need to do laundry and make some more gazpacho (a whole new crop of cucumbers have arrived!) so we'll not be on any kinda schedule for the day. She hasn't expressed an interest in seeing a lot of things soooo, we're just going to wing it and see what happens. It is good to spend time with her even if we don't do a lot of things.
Soooo, I'll be posting regularly all week-- thank you very much! Take care, thanks for stopping by and have a good evening!
