Update at 7:30pmNot Much For Commentary
I try to keep away from commenting on the news and such around here-- you've probably noticed. On any given weekday, I watch the television news in the morning and at night on the local ABC affiliate; if I'm able to watch television past 7am, I usually tune into the Good Morning America show. However, come the weekend, whether or not the ABC affiliate has a weekend show I don't know because I've always watched the weekend Today show. I wouldn't dream of watching the weekday version-- frankly, I can't tolerate Katie Couric and Matt Lauer (I don't know why-- I just don't like them).
Every weekend, Soledad O'Brien (a very confusingly named person) and David Bloom would wake me up with a cup of coffee and a laugh. I always enjoyed watching them-- they had good chemistry together. A few weeks before the outbreak of the Iraqi Freedom campaign, David Bloom was in Kuwait and, I was relieved to see that he had returned before anything started. Then again, I was surprised to see that, once the war started, there he was-- planted on top of some sort vehicle, embedded in the Third Infantry. Yikes!! What was he doing? That's dangerous stuff!!
This morning, as I sat down to watch the Today show, Soledad O'Brien started and with a broken voice, made the announcement that David Bloom had died overnight in Iraq. I was shocked, to say the least. How did he die? Was it a stray bullet? An angry Iraqi? No, he died from a pulmonary embolism. That's something that would've gotten him whether he was there or here.
He leaves behind a wife and three daughters. My condolences to the family and the network-- they've lost one of the Great Ones in broadcasting as far as I'm concerned.
They can rest assured however that he died while doing something he loved-- reporting professionally and intelligently from the front lines. He was very, very good at his job and made an impression on people doing the job he loved to do.
Saturday and Sunday mornings won't be the same for me.
Getting Started
I need to get my day started-- I've got a measuring coming over for the dress for the little girl at 10am so I'll bid you adieu to return later.
Have a good morning.
Back again, eh? Yep and with tons-o-stuff accomplished! I've made two pairs of pants, one skirt, had a nap, grocery shopped and measured the baby (9 month old girl) for the dress. It has, indeed, been a busy day.
The temperatures, after a gorgeous spring-like weekend, are beginning to drop and to the west of us, there is a storm warning (for snow!!). No, I won't say it-- yes, I will: I'm getting tired of this "Four Seasons Stuff"!!! ARGH already-- its April 6, let's have some warmth!!!!! And, with that said, this summer when its 90 and humid as Houston outside, you know I'm going to be complaining about that, too. Yeah, well, if the only thing I complain about is the weather, believe me, we're doing really well!!
Re-Org'd
Brian's done his re-organization of my office/sewing room. Actually, he re-arranged the bicycle and added two storage cabinets to the mix. Now I have to spend some time up here putting things away so that it stays more organized up here!
Okay well bits of sewing remain (waistbands to attach and hems to make) so I'm going to get back to that and start getting the re-organization finished up in my sewing office.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great evening!
Saturday, April 5, 2003The Best Intentions
What was supposed to be a four-hour shift turned into a six-hour shift! Yep, you got it, I'm beat! When I got home, I was only able to lay down for about 45 minutes-- my back and knees are both killing me yet!! I'm going to go downstairs in a little while and do some hand-quilting and watch a movie but I'm just too pooped to do anything major tonight! That was not expected, needless to say but I did sell two machines so that's nice.
In addition to the sale of two machines, I got another sewing job-- I'll be sewing a dress for a 9-month old girl to wear "in" a wedding next month. The mom and baby will be by tomorrow so that I can measure her and figure out the sizing, etc. Its going to be in very grown-up fabric so it should be interesting to see how it comes out-- yes, you'll get to see a copy of it, too-- Not to fear.
I picked up some business card stock at the CompUSA next to the store today-- I'm going to make up business cards for this little venture I seem to be developing. On Monday, I'll go by and pick up our taxes and ask a few questions of the tax person to see about how to keep things separate so that we can take care of the business end of this the right way. Should be interesting and yes, you'll be in on the development, too.
For now, I'm going to sign off and go collapse in a corner-- thanks for stopping by and your patience and your tolerance and . . . well, for being YOU!! Have a great evening!
Friday, April 4, 2003The Lull After the Storm
As is usual, we're in a slow period at the office. That'll probably last for another couple of days and then, we'll kick into the second quarter. That's always a bit busier so it'll be nice to get that going.
So Far . . . So Good . . .
I've got one top done and a pair of pants (the wrap-around style from the 60s are back in style) finished. The rest of that'll go fast enough and then there are only about 8 more separates (skirts, pants, shorts and tops) to make along with working on the quilt and the quilt top and the this and the that!! Never a dull moment around here but you knew that, eh?
Must be a slow news day-- I'm at a loss for the next thought! Oh, well, if it comes to me, I'll be back up to post again. Its still early!!
Have a good night!!
Thursday, April 3, 2003Short-n-Sweet
I got a payroll check in the mail tonight-- it had a commission on it!! I'm just thrilled!! I think its pretty neat to get a commission, even if it isn't a "big amount". Pretty cool!!
Well, other than that, I'm tired but looking forward to my sewing weekend-- I'll write more over the weekend, I'm sure.
Thanks for stopping by and have a good evening!
Wednesday, April 2, 2003Uneventful Day
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Work was work-- we did, obviously, survive another quarter-end. I left work early however, coming home to take a nap before going on to physical therapy. I've only got one week left-- probably-- because I'm doing so well. Then, after coming home from that, we got some Chinese take-out and I settled down to relax. That was more appealing to me than making myself crazy trying to sew-- at least, not until later. At about 8pm, I realized that there was nothing worth watching on television so I went into the dining room where I have my fabric cutting board set up and laid out some fabric for a top. With the serger, I'm able to sew knits easier than I've ever been able to do before so I'm having a grand time getting that set up with cut-out patterns, etc.
It turns out that I'm going to work on Saturday afterall-- we're still short staffed due to sickness and surgeries of other folks in the store so, I said I'd help out by coming into the store on Saturday morning. At least its only a four hour shift and then, I don't have to close-- thank goodness!!
My only "work assignment" for the next two days is to write my annual evaluation-- man, I hate that!! I'm not any good at that sort of thing but I have to be at least for the next two days. Wish me luck!!
Anyway, Brian's ready to fall asleep-- allergies are making both of us excessively tired.
Take care, thanks for stopping by and have a great evening!
Tuesday, April Oneth, 2003Whadja Expect??
I've gotta have a sense of humor about things-- without it, I'd be nowhere these days!!
After a long lunch in Annapolis, we headed back to the office for a momentary drop-off and then, back out we all went our separate ways.
I've just returned home at 10pm and we're getting ready for bed early tonight-- we've both got various aches and pains not making it worthwhile to fight but allow ourselves to get "the appropriate amount of rest" we so richly deserve.
Thanks for starting out a new month with me-- have a great evening!
Monday, March 31, 2003Saying Good-Bye!
Yes, indeedy!! The first quarter of 2003 is gone . . . already!! Man, it doesn't take much, does it?
Of course, tonight I had my weekly conversation with my sister who asked me how I had the spare time to talk with her in amongst the six or so "jobs" that I'm working. I corrected her: its only 3 jobs, 4 if I get embroidery work. I do feel a bit like some things are flying by me but it could be worse, I suppose . . . it could be mandatory instead of voluntary. Thank heavens for that blessing, eh?
Stats and Such
I haven't done this for awhile. Let's see: 11,008 age reads as of 10:15pm with "Total Unique Sites" at 3,841. There've been a total of 56 countries that came by to see me and, I can vouch for everyone of 'em!! I swear that I have at least one correspondent from every country, too!! That's really fun!!
By means of my searches, I see how some of you find me. I've got a feeling that Brian should've patented the sewing table: that's been my highest hit from search engines for three months running. I get quite a few inquiries by email about it, too. The pictures that are on my website don't really do it justice though-- since we moved, he's improved its construction ten-fold. Those secrets, they'll never know!
Speaking of Search Engines . . .
This is how some of you got here:
Top 10 hits were:
Sewing table
How to make a quilt
Pictures of Michigan
Ano Nuevo State Reserve
Elizabethan Theatre
Martin's Beach
Lake Shasta Pictures
Pictures of Lake Shasta
Filoli Gardens
Best recipesSure am glad that I've kept my Meanderings page current!!
Some of the more unique searches were:
how to dress for a broadway play - Someone who was concerned about it!! I like that!!! Good for you!! A true appreciation of the arts!!!
fools bay - Is there such a place?
happy dog - Yes, she is . . . very.
aviary or intensifiers or microcodes or perplexed or room - Broad-- very broad search pattern!!
brussel sprouts weight loss - Not even I would go for that one!!I know that there are things that I am forgetting to tell you about but, the most important thing is that I appreciate that you come by, irrespective of how you got here-- thanks for stopping by and partaking of my point of view and way of life.
I appreciate it and your input-- keep it coming and, as always, HAVE A GREAT EVENING!
