How To Build a Quilt from Scratch

As I've said before, I'm not intimidated by the concept of quilting-- I'm really enjoying the creativity and, while I haven't made very many things yet, I am by no means bored or running out of patterns.  Every time I make something, I want to learn something new whether it be an assembly, cutting or piecing trick or a stitching/quilting trick, I want to learn something new with each and every project I take on in quilting.

Last Sunday, I got to thinking about what I could make for someone who wouldn't be a little girl for very long (7 is not a baby, you know) but wouldn't be a grown up (except in her own mind) for awhile yet either.  I wanted it to be something that she could use and think of her "Auntie Marcia".

I had seen someone in The Granary with a piecing/assembly technique that I wanted to try: strips in triangles.  I showed Brian my idea and he came up with an improvement:  Strips in triangles in some of the squares and plain strips in other squares to form a unique pair of blocks!

So I started with a plan.  I drew out the intended design and started cutting.

The Plan

Pink (background) to Yellow

Pink & Yellow to Green

Pink, Yellow & Green to Blue

First finished strip

Cutting the triangle from the strips

Cutting the triangle from the solid

Piecing the first block together

With all four sides

And sewing together
(Make 4 pink and 4 blue)

Cutting the blocks for the alternate square

Ahh, the plan is coming together!

Cutting the strips for the alternate square

Piecing the alternate squares together

One finished alternate square...

...and the other alternate
(Make 4 blue in and 4 blue out)

Putting the rows together

A row

Me sewing a row . . .

Closer of the same

Inner top together!

Now to start on the border...

. . . there's one!

And the other...

And done!!

Grown Up World"

The nice thing about the wall-hanging and Landon's quilt was that there was a pattern.  With this one, there wasn't a pattern at all, just my hand-written drawing.  That's why I needed these pictures.  Yes, it may be overly-detailed but, better to have detail than not to have detail and then have a problem if I ever want to re-create this pattern.  The cool thing is that there is some fabric left over (remember the 4th pink square that I couldn't find?) from the strips and the solids that I can make a couple of pillows from as well.  Nice cushy place to sleep, don'tcha think?

Prior to my next "class", I'll pick out the backing for this top and quilt it in the last class.  I think it should be interesting to see what I come up with for a backing, don't you?
